The 2026 Madrid Open, one of the most prestigious clay-court tournaments on the tennis circuit, gets underway on Thursday, with several Argentine players hoping to make a strong run. There will be 11 Argentine players in the men’s and women’s singles draws after 36-year-old Marco Trungelliti (world No. 77) entered as a lucky loser following the withdrawal of Belgium’s Raphael Collignon. The highest-ranked players will once again be Francisco Cerúndolo (20) and Tomás Martín Etcheverry (29), who will enter the tournament as seeded players and begin their campaigns directly in the second round on Friday. Cerúndolo is coming off an up-and-down week at the Munich Open, where he fell to local Alexander Zverev (3) after taking the lead in the opening set, for a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win for the German. The 27-year-old, who won his fourth-ever ATP singles title at home at the Buenos Aires Open in February, will need to bring his A game to repeat his semifinal appearance last year. Etcheverry, meanwhile, will look to improve on his second-round loss to Portugal’s Nuno Borges (49) at the Barcelona Open. The La Plata native was another who secured a big result at the beginning of the year, lifting his first-ever ATP Tour-level title at the Rio de Janeiro Open. However, he was never able to break through to the third round in Madrid. The rest of the Argentine contingent includes Sebastián Báez (64), Mariano Navone (45), Camilo Ugo Carabelli (57), Juan Manuel Cerúndolo (67), Thiago Tirante (75) and Francisco Comesaña (105) In the women’s draw of the same tournament, Solana Sierra will once again be the sole Argentine representative.
