Argentine footballer goes viral after boyfriend greeting video resurfaces online

Date:

Argentine footballer Ignacio Lago went viral on Monday after a clip showing a greeting from his boyfriend that had aired on a Santa Fe TV network in 2025 resurfaced on social media. One clip of the message and the player’s reactions quickly reached over 1 million views on X. The video, in which Lago’s boyfriend greeted him as a surprise, was shown during an interview the Colón de Santa Fe player did for club-sponsored show Sangre y Luto in May of last year. The footage was later uploaded to the club’s YouTube channel. The surprise greeting The footage, which aired while the player was being interviewed, shows Lago’s boyfriend thanking him for being “a wonderful person and excellent professional.” “I know how much work you put in and what your dreams are. I love you a lot and thank you for defending the colors of my city,” he added. Talking later to the show’s hosts, Lago called it an “irrational love just like football” and said that they “constantly try to express their feelings.” Despite many Argentine outlets treating the news as if Lago had made an official coming-out announcement, the truth is that the player made no comments on the topic during the interview. Lago regularly shares stories with his boyfriend on his Instagram. To date, Lago is the only male professional Argentine footballer to openly discuss his homosexuality. Goalkeeper Nicolás Fernández, the first footballer to do so in 2020, played for a semi-pro side in a regional La Pampa province league. Lago, a 23-year-old striker, hails from Isidro Casanova in Buenos Aires Province and has been on fire recently with Colón, scoring three goals and providing one assist in seven matches so far.  He has helped the Sabalero team reach the top of the Primera Nacional, the second division of Argentine football, where they are tied with Deportivo Morón.
