Flight delays are expected across Argentina on Tuesday as state workers union ATE is going on a 24-hour strike to demand better salaries and protest President Javier Mileis austerity measures. Airport workers represented by ATE include healthcare personnel, firefighters, inspectors, administrative staff, and land control. Pilots and airplane crew belong to different unions and are not expected to take part in the protest. In addition to the strike, workers plan to march and hold rallies at different airports across the country. The main protest will take place in front of the Jorge Newbery Airport in Buenos Aires City at 11 a.m. ATE Secretary General Rodolfo Aguiar is expected to give a press conference there around noon. If theres no money for workers, there will be no peace for the government. Conflicts will escalate, and it will not be our responsibility, Aguiar said in the unions statement announcing the strike. Garbage collection, migration control, port sanitary control, traffic agents, and forest fire management will also be affected. The union said that medical flights will be guaranteed. ATE protests began on Tuesday morning at other state dependencies, including the National Weather Service (SMN, in Spanish) and the National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI). In the latter, demonstrators will rally against Deregulation Minister Federico Sturzeneggers announcement that the government will slash over 900 functions it currently performs.
